Please note this workshop can NOT be completed online. You need to feel this in your body, and in the bodies of the yoga students who live with different abilities. Unfortunately that can't be experienced without touch and feeling how a body with different abilities can move.
What sets us apart? This training focuses on inclusion and evidence based practice. Our neurological inspired curriculum is designed to provide foundational education on diagnoses such as spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, stroke, cerebral palsy and ALS. But it doesn't stop there. The principles of adapted yoga can be applied to EVERY body. This includes those yoga students who are elderly, living with trauma, mental illness AND chronic illness.
What is the cost? Your investment is $749. This is the only workshop in Australia of its kind. Payment can be made by direct deposit or credit card. Please note credit card transactions will have an added 2% bank transaction fee.
Can I pay by instalments? No problem. A deposit of $200 will secure your place. The balance needs to be paid 30 days prior to the start date.
Can I cancel my registration? Of course you can at any time. Sometimes unexpected life events happen and your need to change your plans. - Prior to 30 days of course commencement: full refund minus $100 - Within 30 days of course commencement: full refund minus $250 - Within 14 days of course commencement: 100% cancellation fee
Do I have to be a yoga teacher to attend? No you don’t have to be a yoga teacher to attend. But you need to have the correct yoga qualifications in order to teach yoga. The minimum qualification in Australia is a 200hr certificate, and there are many schools to choose from. This is particularly important to note for Allied Health Professionals who want to include yoga into their treatment plans - please check with AHPRA or your registration body, as this is generally not permitted.
How many participants are in the course? To allow for a personal and interactive workshop it's limited to 10 participants only.
How long is the course? Friday through to Sunday, 9am – 5pm each day.
What is covered in the course?
The principles of adapted yoga
Foundational education on common neurological diagnoses
Evidence based practice – yoga for disability and chronic health conditions
The art of adjustment and props use
Planning, sequencing, and assisting adapted classes
NDIS – how yoga fits into the scheme
The heart of this is the mind body relationship and teaching activation through the inner body (subtle awareness without extraneous muscular movement) - which is really important if your body doesn't work the way it once did. This is very much an experiential workshop. You will have several opportunities to assist students with a disability during a yoga class.
There’s no better way to learn than to embody it!
Does this allow me CPD points? Yes. For every hour of attendance, it is 1 CPD point. So that means you earn 24 points.
What is adapted yoga? It’s just yoga. The term adapted / accessible / adaptive yoga has been used in the UK and US for many years as classes for people with chronic illnesses or a disability has flourished. It’s a different perspective. We look at the essence of asana and how that fits with someone who is living with cognitive or physical limitations.
What do I need to bring? Comfy clothes and an open mind. If you have a favourite meditation cushion, bring it along to sit on. Can I please ask that you are mindful of your choice of outfit on the last day. When working with our students, we can get very close and personal when assisting with positioning or transfers. We'll talk more about this over the first 2 days.
Where is it held? Sargood on Collaroy on Sydney's Northern Beaches. This is such a beautiful location - fresh air, sunshine and ocean!
Are meals provided? Coffee and Tea is available throughout the day. You will need to organise your own lunches on Day 1 and 2.
If I don’t live in Sydney, where can I stay? There are a few options, depending on your lifestyle choices and budget.
Here are a couple of options to consider : - Bellagio by the Sea – have 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments. Perhaps share with a new friend? http://www.bellagiobythesea.com.au - Sydney Beachouse YHA – dorms or private rooms. http://www.bellagiobythesea.com.au - Airbnb may also have options https://www.airbnb.com.au - https://www.stayz.com.au/accommodation/nsw/sydney/collaroy-beach

TESTIMONIAL
"I am an Occupational Therapist looking at completing my yoga teacher training. My dream is to bring yoga to all who wish to benefit from what yoga has to offer. However there are some barriers to people accessing yoga. My aim in attending the course was to gain some knowledge as to how to make yoga accessible to my client group (i.e. stroke, Aquired Brain Injury, Cerebral Palsy, parkinsons etc). The adaptive yoga course offered great insight and ideas. Lisa used mixed learning methods to integrate and teach the core principles of adaptive yoga which I found very useful. The best part of the course which I found most useful and interesting was the practical hands on experience with real clients. Being able to learn the theory, anatomy and practical aspects of teaching (i.e. props) as well as get hands on real life experience allowed me to better grasp the principles and concepts of adaptive yoga. The location was breath taking and definately worth the trip down from Gold Coast." Ana
"I feel so blessed that I spent the money to come along. I know this will be a great benefit to so many, including ourselves. So thank you to all for the friendliness and thank you Lisa for all of your knowledge, effort, love, hard work and preparation ... all your effort was noticed, received and appreciated." Emma
"The workshop was fascinating." Jen.
"Thank you so much for offering this workshop. It was such an amazing experience and you sharing your knowledge is greatly appreciated! I left on Sunday feeling VERY inspired." Maddison
"I had my class today and introduced bits and pieces that I learnt at your amazing workshop, I just wanted to pass on my students thanks for thinking and caring about wheelchair bound people... Next week we are investigating using blocks and the wall for downward dog. I cannot explain how alive I feel after the workshop." Lisa
